First step: how do you choose the lock gate you need?

Ensuring the safety of operators when transferring loads to or from a work platform is crucial when a company has such a mezzanine floor in its warehouse.

A simple chain or rising barrier offers a minimum of safety, but is not enough to guarantee complete safety for the operator.

How to proceed

The installation of a safety gate, also known as a pallet gate, ensures the safety of the operator and the loads throughout the operation.

A quick reminder of how it works: the barrier ensures the continuity of the guardrail on the edge of the work platform. When a load has to be transferred from the ground floor, the barrier is activated so that the guardrail on the mezzanine side is closed. Together with the supports, this forms an airlock into which the load can be safely deposited. Only now does the operator activate the rear guardrail again to open it, a movement that simultaneously closes the front guardrail. Once again, the continuity of the guardrail at the edge of the void is guaranteed.

That's fine in principle, but in practice, how do I know which type of safety gate is best for me from all those available on the market

The most important thing is that your pallet gate complies with current standards. ⚠️ The market is currently awash with ‘low-cost’ safety gates that completely fail to comply with legal directives and therefore with safety requirements. When you buy a pallet sluice, check whether it is made in France or elsewhere. Product certification guarantees that the gate complies with legislation (APAVE in France, TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH internationally). When it comes to safety, there's no room for error. That's why our AC2M safety gates are tested not only by APAVE, but also by TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH (the German certification body)! Double certification - double assurance of safety‼️

Okay, by opting for an AC2M sluice gate, I'm sure I've chosen a gate that complies with regulations and standards, and is also certified. But how do I know which type is right for my working environment?

Aurélien COUDRAT, co-manager of AC2M in Dry, gives us a useful summary.

‘For so-called basic situations where there are no particular constraints (no ceiling height or restricted platform depth, handling with forklift truck / pallet truck, no fire doors, beams or other elements that could hinder the installation of the protection), a tilting safety gate like our SG1 type 🚧 is perfectly suitable. The front and rear railings tilt to guarantee simultaneous opening at the front, closing at the back and vice versa. This type of pallet sluice is available as standard in various widths and heights, but can also be made to measure.

Do you have a very narrow platform, or do you have to place your load in an upstairs corridor? Opt for a sliding safety gate, like our SG4 type. 🚧 This device works on the principle of a guillotine: to open the front guardrail, you slide the rear guardrail vertically. And to save even more space on the platform, the sluice gatee can be fitted with a folding guardrail at the rear, freeing up the entire surface of the mezzanine. Clever, isn't it?

What if I'm using a hoist instead of a forklift? And what's more, my loads are high? Don't panic, the lifting safety gate (type SG3 from AC2M) 🚧 is made for you. They work on the principle of reversed level crossing barriers: when the arm at the front opens, the arm at the back closes. Do you have a ceiling height that doesn't allow the arm to open all the way? Then the safety sluice will be designed with a folding arm!

Basic? Check. Narrow? Check. Hoist? Check. Then there's the case of a mezzanine with a ceiling height constraint. I want to be able to pass fairly high loads despite a very restricted ceiling height. Is there a suitable solution? Of course there is. A folding and tilting pallet gate like our SG5 🚧 is specially designed for this situation. When handled, the guardrail folds up, grouping the three rails side by side. This leaves maximum height for loads.

Yes, but what if I've got an opening right in the front of the building and not only need to secure the transfer of loads, but also need to close off this opening? Then a tilting gate forming a door on the outside 🚧 is just what you need! At AC2M, we call it the SG6-type. At the back, it has the same features as an SG1 type, but at the front, it has a cladded door.

All our SG3, 4, 5 and 6 safety gates are custom-built to specifications drawn up with the customer."

OK, so now we've got the different types covered. Are there any other things I should bare in mind or check when choosing my pallet gate

"You should be aware that in a food, chemical or explosive environment, there are other constraints to be respected. Depending on the requirements, the barrier must be fitted with braids to suit an ATEX environment, constructed in stainless steel or galvanised, fitted with plugs (food construction), etc. Before finalising your choice, make sure you've taken all these aspects into account!"
